Brief
The Jean file
Eight missions. One haircut. Scroll slow.
-
Mission 1
Check in
He paid cash for Room 9 at a motor hotel off the highway. One bag. No name in the book. The clerk remembered the tweed and nothing else.
-
Mission 2
The haircut
A blond bob and a waxed mustache. Every witness gave the same description. Not one of them could look away long enough to notice the rest.
-
Mission 3
Room service
At 4:20 somebody knocked who was not housekeeping. He left through the back with the piece in his hand and his tie over his shoulder.
-
Mission 4
Checkout
The sign went first. Then the office. Then everything with a room number. He did not look back. Nobody with hair like that looks back.
-
Mission 5
The witness
One man saw all of it from the lot. He told the cops about the hair. He told them about the mustache. Then he asked where to buy.
-
Mission 6
Wanted
Five stars before he reached the road. The cops had a description and no name. So the county gave him one. Grand Jean.
-
Mission 7
No forwarding address
He lay low at a ranch past the county line. Nine quiet days. On the tenth he came back with a can of gas and a lighter. Grand Jean does not leave forwarding addresses.
-
Mission 8
City limits
New suit. Same hair. He stood on the hill at sunset and looked at ten thousand windows. Every one of them is about to learn his name.
